Getting Your NIF

  • The Numero de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) is the Portuguese tax number required to open a bank account, rent and/or purchase a property, register for utilities, and many more essential transactions.

  • If you’re looking to purchase property in Portugal or open a bank account in Portugal, you will need to have your NIF document.

  • Any of the following documents are acceptable:

    1. The first page of a bank statement issued within the past 3 months

    2. A utility bill issued within the past 3 months

    3. A driver's license (front and back).

    The document should include your physical address and your name, exactly as shown on your passport.

    Note: Can't be a P.O. box or business address.

  • A Fiscal Representative in Portugal acts as an intermediary between non-residents and the tax authority in Portugal (Serviço de Finanças).

    To order your Portuguese NIF our legal team will need to be elected as your tax representative. This is done by signing a power of attorney which you will receive after you place your order. They can then order your NIF and inform you of any notices from the tax authority.

    Our NIF service includes 12 months of fiscal representation.

  • You can cancel your fiscal representation subscription as soon as you’ve become a tax resident in Portugal.

  • It can take 2-4 weeks to process. However, we aim to deliver your Portuguese NIF within 2 weeks.

Opening Your Bank Account

  • Yes, you will need a NIF to open a bank account in Portugal.

    By signing the Power of Attorney document, you allow our legal team to open a bank account in Portugal on your behalf.

      • 3 months payslips, letter from your employer confirming your employment or your latest income tax statement

  • The expected time to open your bank account and receive your bank account details is up to 4 weeks.

  • Purchasing our open a bank account in Portugal service does not include the initial deposit amount required by the bank to open your account nor any bank fees.
