One of the most commonly accepted modes of payment (other than cash) is Portugal’s Multibanco system. It is only accessible via a Portuguese bank account, so if you are relocating to the country or know you’ll be spending long periods in Portugal, consider opening an account.

Note that you will need a NIF to open a bank account in Portugal.
